The First Runner
The people noticed his rituals and copied them. Dawnhold's future began before Dawnhold had a wall: three knocks before opening a door, two sentries awake for every one asleep, no one eating alone when grief was fresh, no bitten person executed without examination, no child told that cruelty was strength. Pike called those rules inefficient until they kept his soldiers from shooting a feverish girl who later woke unchanged. Mara called them medicine. Lena called them data with a conscience. Eli called them the only proof he had that power progression did not have to mean moral collapse.
At night, when the others slept, the mutation tested him in quieter ways. It offered maps made of scent, paths through enemy bodies, shortcuts through fear.
