At 8:50 the next morning, Lin entered Cape Café carrying a battered toolbox.
Su Wanzhou sat in the far corner, gray coat buttoned, two untouched coffees before her. The moment she saw the box, her expression darkened.
“I told you not to bring anything.”
“Multimeter, screwdrivers, two dead batteries.” Lin sat. “Which one gets me arrested?”
She pushed a spectrum across the table.
“Hanhai’s fragment is mostly titanium and iron, but its atomic arrangement changes every forty-seven seconds. When it changes, our original instrument records change too. As if the object decides what we’re allowed to see.”
Lan-Zero had called it information camouflage. If Hanhai possessed a genuine fragment, its submersible had succeeded.
“Did you preserve anything?”
