Mason swallowed.
"The media will lose their minds."
"They do that every day."
"The fans will attack you."
"They've attacked me for twenty years."
"Some guys in the team won't accept it."
Hayes's voice turned cold. "Then they'll learn."
After the call ended, Mason sat in the truck for a long time.
At eight the next morning, U.S. Soccer released its provisional World Cup roster.
Ryan Brooks, Lucas Reed, Daniel Walsh, Ethan Miller... familiar names filled the screen. The last line looked as if someone had intentionally placed it in the corner.

The internet paused for about three seconds.
