The Man the City Swallowed

The second shooter fired again, but the bridge vibrated underfoot and the shot went wide, punching through an ad board in a burst of lights. "Move!" Ethan shouted at Maria. He half-carried her between two parked maintenance vans and into the rain. Sirens got louder. A helicopter thumped somewhere above. On the other side of the bridge, a camera kept tracking them, the lens like a giant cold eye. Ethan felt every building vibration in the area layered together until it almost split his skull. He realized, then, that he was not hearing buildings. He was hearing the city hurt. By the time he got Maria near a trapped taxi, police were shouting for him to stop.
