The Man the City Swallowed

Ethan planted one knee in the sludge, grabbed the edge of the cabinet, and tried to lift. It barely moved. His arms shook immediately. Another crack rang overhead. The echo in his head sharpened, as if the structure itself were telling him where it could fail and where it could hold. Ethan saw a ridiculous but usable answer. He jammed the wrench into a side slot, shifted the force line along a fractured pipe, then drove his shoulder into the metal. Pain flared across his ribs. The cabinet slid just enough. "Now!" Maria pulled her leg free. Ethan yanked her out and the wall behind them collapsed with a roar, burying half the doorway in rubble. They tumbled into a drainage channel and slid through filthy water.
