Fifteen years earlier, a younger Gu Beichen stood before the locker with tears in his eyes. Shen lay on the table and inserted the neural wires into her own skull.

“Who is the future?” Gu asked.
She looked toward Lin across fifteen years.
“A child who will hate me.”

Someone applauded behind them.
