“Before I choose, a question for the marquis.” Lain displayed the transparent scale. “If the Office considers it dangerous, you must know what vessel can contain it.”
“A dragon-sealing coffer.”
Black flame rose in Lain’s sight.

“Then bring one.”
A clerk presented a copper coffer carved with runes that suppressed red and frost dragons. It lacked the runes of nameless dragons Serena had discovered in a forbidden text.
Lain did not touch it. “The marquis assures us this can hold my imprint. Let him place it inside.”
Silence settled.
Stealing a blood imprint triggered the contract’s retaliation. An ordinary one might burn a hand. No one knew what this one would do.
