The Countdown on the Bench
Bottom of the ninth. Two outs. The Harbor Thunder trailed by one.
The roar of forty-two thousand fans rolled over the visitors' dugout like surf. Lin Ye sat in the seat nearest the water cooler, cap pulled low, gripping a bat that had never touched pine tar.
The bat had followed him for 146 games. He had used it in seventeen plate appearances.
“Can Zhou Yan keep going?” captain and catcher Tang Xiao asked, tearing off his mask. He breathed like a broken bellows.
Nobody answered.
This was the final game of the regular season. Win, and the Thunder claimed the last wild card. Lose, and they went home before October for the fifth straight year. Ace Zhou Yan had thrown 107 pitches and was now rotating his right shoulder in the bullpen tunnel.
