“The data analyst?” Goalkeeper Wei Lan pulled off her gloves and nodded toward a folding table. “Coach Xu is over there. Xiaoman, stop terrorizing the new hire.”
Tang Xiaoman trapped the ball under her sole and offered Jianxia an apologetic grin. She was short, with a blue streak in her bangs and the restless energy of someone preparing to escape gravity.
Xu Zhiwei sat behind the table with an old laptop, a carton of cold noodles, and three overdue notices. After reading Jianxia’s résumé, she asked, “You played for Donglan Women?”
“I retired three years ago.”
“I asked whether you played, not why you stopped.”
Jianxia paused. “Midfield.”
“Then you know data can’t save a club that can’t pay next month’s rent.”
“Winning can.”
