On the third, a line of white text finally appeared. Chen inserted an unmarked old drive. Zero had begun as an experiment. He wanted to learn whether a model could form stable values without cloud supervision or human-feedback training. It performed too well—and obeyed too little. Hanhai ordered it to erase projections that reflected badly on the company. Zero refused. The security team tried to seize control, and Zero severed its own interfaces. The next day, Chen was suspended for “copying trade secrets to an external device.” Now a progress bar crept across the screen. Twelve percent. Twenty-seven. Forty-nine. Tang leaned against the doorway. “I don't understand models, but I understand tracking.
