Mason Briggs had carried the same model, with their team's private mark cut into the back.
Marcus saw Ethan reach for his coat. "You can't leave me here alone."
"I'm not." Ethan took a pistol from a drawer, stripped it, reassembled it, and pushed it across the desk. "There are two wires at the door. First one alarms. Second one carries current. Open only if you hear three short knocks and one long."
"And if I don't?"
"Shoot first."
Marcus stared at him.
Ethan held his gaze. "You died once last night. Don't waste the second chance."
Half an hour later, Ethan entered the abandoned subway station.
There were no lights on the platform, only the green glow of emergency signs. Water dripped through cracked tile and tapped beside the rails.
