Chapter Two: The Play You Fear
The second thought was Mountain's. The called protection required him to pull outside on an injured knee. Kai could exploit the secret to win a practice rep—or destroy the captain's season.
“Timeout!” Kai shouted.
Grant glared. “In a scrimmage?”
“Change pull protection to downhill run. The front is pinching. The four gap is open.”
“The call works.”
“It doesn't need to.”
Grant finally nodded. Mountain drove straight ahead and opened a lane for the score. After the whistle, he rose slowly with a hand on his knee.
In the concrete tunnel, he stopped Kai.
“You saw it?”
“The defense pinching.”
“Not what I asked. Only the doctor and I know about my knee.”
