Good. It meant Crowe was afraid faster than Jack had hoped. Jack tossed Red Feather a water bag. "Go east. Don't look back." Red Feather caught it but did not leave. "If you ride west alone, you die." Jack mounted. "I should have died four years ago." He drew the reins and rode west. Sunset stretched his shadow and the horses' shadows long across the salt. Red Feather stood on the lakebed and watched the white veteran ride away. After a long while, he spoke one sentence in his own tongue. It meant: This man is not running from death. He is carrying it to others.
