Bone cracked. "Who sent you?" The rider clenched his teeth. Jack pressed harder. "I'll ask once more." "Crowe," the man forced out. "Elias Crowe. There's a bounty posted. Jack Walker. Five hundred alive. One thousand dead." Jack looked down at him. "Dead is worth more than alive?" The rider breathed hard and gave a twisted smile. "He said if you're still breathing, men won't sleep easy." Jack nodded. "He finally got something right." The pistol fired. The salt lake went quiet again. The young native man stood slowly. He did not say thank you. He took a small bone charm from inside his blanket and placed it at Jack's feet. "You killed the men chasing me," he said in rough but clear English. "I owe you a life."
