“Could we keep some of the bad parts?” Su Lan asked. “Without them, we're so polite we sound like strangers sharing a table.” Wanzhao did not ask Mianmian to feed. She asked them to remake the noodles from the day they met: two spoonfuls of vinegar, half a spoonful of chili oil, and—because the young Zhao Qingshan's hands had shaken—sugar mistaken for salt. The result was spectacularly bad. Su Lan's eyes reddened at the first bite. “The same awful taste,” she said. Zhao still could not remember their wedding, but he picked the cilantro from his bowl and placed it in hers. His body recognized love before his mind did. Watching them, Xinghe understood that memory could not be restored by one grand song alone.
