The people inside it could only follow their marks. If he dragged the girl away, the shot would pull her back.
He had repaired enough broken reels to know what film feared—and what it could forgive.
Do not change the actor. Change the cut.
The chandelier trembled again. On the white wall, the shadow with the wire began to rise. Shen seized a stainless-steel table knife and drew a curve across the floor. It cut through the center of the image. The room made the sound of paper tearing. Everyone froze into grainy stillness.
He pulled a candle from the girl’s cake and set it on the empty table to her left. When the flame moved, the light moved with it.
