Chapter Three: The Absent Director

The numbers struck something in Shen. A corridor. A red emergency lamp. A projector spindle stopping at 3:17. He tried to hold the memory, but it slipped away like wet film. In its place he suddenly could not remember what herb his mother put in braised fish—an irrelevant, real piece of his life silently cut out. The price had begun to collect. They stayed at the archive that night. Lin locked the restaurant reel in evidence storage while Shen waited in the restoration room. Before midnight, the cabinet door sprang open. Together they watched the strip unspool across the bench like a black tongue, then produce a new roll at its end. The note was the same: “Composition unacceptable. Discard.”
