Chapter One: The Internet Waits for Me to Fail
Lin displayed a blank canvas, closed every reference library, opened the system monitor, and walked his phone around the room.
“Pick someone who just entered the stream,” he said. “I'll paint their portrait.”
The vote selected a user called Runner Yuan. His avatar showed a delivery rider in a yellow helmet, half his face blurred by rain, neon signs glowing behind him.
“Do I have your permission?”
After a long pause, the account answered: “Go ahead. Please make me look a little more alive.”
Lin put stylus to screen.
With the first line, the noise of the world receded.
He began with the helmet—not its outline, but the tiny cracks where sunlight had made the plastic brittle.
