At 11:59:50, the crossing light turned red. Rain drummed on the plastic cover over his box. At midnight, the page refreshed and REVERSE RAIN changed from a gray preview to a live post.
In the same second, something boomed to the south.
A storm-drain cover in the center of the road jumped half an inch. Water did not drain through it. Instead, runoff gathered along the rim and rose in transparent columns. A dozen streams opened under the streetlights, broke into droplets, and fell upward into the clouds.
