Chapter Three - Even Underground Burns
"I said safer than outside," Sophie shot back.
"That's just slower death," Lucy said.
Nobody denied it.
Elliot scanned the space quickly and saw the design flaw immediately. The underground site depended on surface-level heat dissipation. Once the parking structure above it ignited, the whole shelter could become a heat reservoir. Safety wasn't about hiding here. It was about getting independent cooling and independent water online before the site cooked itself from above.
"Show me the manual reset for level two," he said.
Sophie eyed him. "You can fix it?"
"I can tell you if it's fixable."
She hesitated only a second before handing over a tablet. Elliot studied the schematic and found the problem right away.
