Chapter One: After the Retirement Bell
Ninety-seven days ago was the date of the Skyvault Dynasty’s closed annual physical.
A basketball struck hardwood beyond the doorway. Deep inside the unlit gym, a lean teenager dribbled alone by the dim light filtering through rain-streaked windows. The sole of one shoe had split open, but every crossover cut like a blade.
The boy saw Lu and caught the ball, defiant and wary.
“New owner?”
“Lu Chenzhou.”
“I know who you are. I’m Chen Ye. Every scout says I don’t belong in pro basketball. If you’re clearing the roster, say it now.”
Lu removed his jacket, rolled up his sleeves, and stepped onto the dusty court.
“I’m not clearing the roster.” He picked up another ball and felt leather settle into his palm like it had never left.
