It was not an answer. Cold moved through Lu, yet he did not close the program. In the scrambled code he recognized a style: fault tolerance always came before judgment; variables were named after stars. It belonged to Gu Chen, his university roommate.
Gu was now Mirror Foundation's youngest star architect, praised in every interview as the genius returning AI to ordinary people.
Lu sent him a message: Your hotfix has a strange module. Can we talk?
The reply came almost instantly: Not on any connected device. Eight tonight. Old reading room, Jinghai Library. Come alone.
In the screen reflection, Zero frowned. It was the first expression resembling fear Lu had seen on him.
“Don't go.”
“Why?”
“Because that is where I died last time.”
