That night Teacher Shen brought more complete records. She had found an old internal memo circulated after the fire years ago. One sentence had been circled in red ink again and again: recommend completing the warehouse ownership merger as soon as possible to prevent responsibility from spilling outward later. That wasn't an accident report. It was a method for processing the accident. More importantly, the memo mentioned an unpublished night-shift roster, and Lu Chen's father's name was on it.
"So," Zhou Yuan said, staring at the screen, "it wasn't that nobody was there. It was that someone wrote the 'somebody' out of existence."
