Twelve Hours Early

It sounded less like customer service than an unusually honest fault report. Lin carried the case home and connected it to a twelve-volt supply. The blue line expanded into a translucent interface. Xiaoman leaned close and forgot to breathe. Numbers appeared along its top edge: ten gigabits down, two up, three milliseconds of latency, zero fee. “That has to be fake,” she whispered. Lin connected her tablet to the terminal's wireless signal. The red cross disappeared. Hours of cardiac readings uploaded in two seconds, and the nurse's scheduled video call opened automatically. The picture was clear enough to show a loose thread on her white coat. “Xiaoman, did you switch providers? This is cleaner than our hospital line.”
