Chapter Five: The Perfect Counterfeit
“Twenty-seven photographs,” He replied. “Take your time.”
Lin searched Laurent's nickname, Alo, with 1999 and photography studio. An abandoned local forum appeared. In a post remembering his late mother, a young Asian boy sat on studio steps wearing the red-and-black Skyvault. Red fabric showed through a torn heel. Despite the low resolution, its outsole damage matched the genuine sole on the table.
Su overlaid the images. “The outsole is his. The upper is not. At minimum, the entire leather shell was replaced.”
“Restoration is not counterfeiting,” He's lawyer said.
“Then ask the last owner.”
Laurent, now in his forties, answered the number in the auction register. After seeing the picture, he brought an old biscuit tin from his attic.
