“It won’t hold,” Marcus said.
“Move,” Erin said through clenched teeth, covering the child’s forehead with a wet cloth.
Daniel took the back of the line. He was the slowest now, barely upright without help. Lena led the way, clearly already knowing the route. Lin noticed that every time she passed a side junction, she glanced at a patch of wall graffiti on the left, as if searching for a marking only she and her family would know.
“You’ve been here?” he asked.
“My brother works subway maintenance,” Lena said. “He told me about this route.”
“Where is he now?”
