Water in Shaft 37
Marcus was already dragging the iron bolt into place. Erin handed the child to a workbench and checked his pulse, muttering a curse under her breath. Lin finally forced the bypass open. The control box clicked like a held breath being released.
For a second, the pipes stayed silent.
Then a low roar began inside the line, the sound of a reservoir waking up far away.
Cold water surged through the valve. Everyone in the room looked up at once.
And then the pounding on the door stopped.
Too quiet.
Marcus opened his mouth to speak, and a thin line of orange light suddenly appeared beneath the door.
Fire.
Not in the pump room. In the corridor outside. Someone had lit debris on fire to drive them out.
