Chapter Two: A Photograph That Would Not Pass
“Mirror sickness!” someone shouted.
Jianyue vaulted the barrier in the confusion. A cold hand caught the back of her neck. The vampire from her apartment stood in the rain, his suit dripping and his courteous smile unchanged.
“Found you.”
She swung the window hammer at his temple. It struck like granite. He did not move, but his fangs slowly lengthened.
“Mr. Pei said you must not be injured,” he said. “He never said I couldn't make you quiet.”
He twisted her wrist. The camera struck her chest, and its motor advanced the film.
Jianyue remembered Zhou's first warning. Don't photograph anything alive.
A warning, reversed, was often an instruction.
