“Why have I forgotten all of it?”
“The Covenant corrected you once each year. Since you were absent from its record, it could only erase every anomaly connected to you.”
Pei Du removed a thin brass token from the maid's ribbon. It read MIDNIGHT PROJECT—MEMORY COLLECTION.
“The Name-Eater wasn't an accident,” Jianyue said.
“Many accidents tonight are on Everday's payroll.”
“You didn't know?”
“I knew the company collected memory for the Covenant. I did not know someone had begun swallowing entire names.” He handed her the token. “Everday is not one man. Some want to mend the Veil. Some want to use the fracture to seize power.
