Before dawn, find a physical anchor left by the person erased today.
She did not remember writing them. Lin examined the book. Its paper was modern, but its binding used a local four-hundred-year-old technique. The handwriting matched the fresh ink on the manuscript.
Together they returned to the booth. Chen's paper boat was folded from a discarded request slip. Inside, in pencil, someone had written: *Little one, Grandpa will take you to see the river gulls tomorrow.*
“A photograph and a database can be rewritten,” Lin said. “We need an object that remembers how it was used without knowing who used it.”
Under raking light, compressed fibers on the boat's underside revealed three erased characters: Chen Shouyi.
