Chapter Three: The Street Written into Being
“Writing isn't mapping,” he said. “It is commanding. Name an origin and destination, and reality consumes everything between to make the shortest road.”
They needed the missing half of the record from Intercalary Lane, but writing the destination might erase half the city. Lin remembered a fire-damaged city map stored at the center. Much of it had burned seventeen years earlier. Its black scars described no street and therefore belonged to “where no name exists.”
They spread it on the floor. Modern roads shimmered like fresh ink above older ones. Instead of writing, Lin pierced a continuous trail of pinholes along the burn marks. The holes were neither names nor directions. They were injuries the paper truly remembered.
