Chapter One: The Confirmation Key in the Rain

Xu stood, his heart hammering. He did not look at Zhou. “It is a voice this city already had. I think we should let it speak.” Forty minutes later, the client did not sign—but asked Xu alone for an executable revision in three days. Zhou’s face hardened. “You think you’ve won?” he whispered afterward. At the window, Xu saw the rain had stopped. A pale seam of light split the clouds. He did not know whether it was coincidence or whether belief had truly shifted something. Then a text arrived from an unknown number. “Xu Chen? It’s Lin Wan. Your mother has been admitted. Emergency needs family.” One door had opened. Another crashed wide before him.
