Chapter Five: Forty Minutes
“An order means admitting the inspection was faked three years ago. It also stops freight in the port and business in the financial district. Someone would rather gamble that the sensors recover.”
The engineer spread a diagram across a desk. “The old program can still be reset locally, but it needs two physical keys. One is at the East District pump station, the other in the underground mall’s control cabinet. Drainage is overloaded. We have forty minutes, at most.”
The system’s phrase returned: resolved perfectly. Perfect could not mean a fairy tale where no one was harmed, or where every interest survived untouched. It could only mean people who could still be saved were told the truth and given a choice.
