Chapter One: The Farewell Letter
“I think a manager sometimes has room for twenty-three players and must choose from twenty-five.”
It was an honest answer, which made it hurt more than a lie.
At the door, Grant reached toward Lin's shoulder but merely caught the medal slipping from the box.
“North County's number is in the envelope. Don't hurt your career because you hate us.”
“I don't hate you.” Lin paused. “At least, not today.”
The first team was holding an open session outside. A supporter recognized him and shouted, “Che! See you in preseason!”
Lin kept walking. His pass flashed red at the gate. Tom, the security guard, hurried out to release it manually.
“The system updates too fast,” Tom muttered. “Sorry, son.”
