Chapter Three: The Discarded
Danny Ward was moving frozen cod at Greyport's east docks when Lin Che appeared at the warehouse door in a suit.
“Buying fish,” Danny asked, “or showing off your severance money?”
He was broader than five years ago, and heavier. His fluorescent work jacket covered shoulders like a wall. Trousers hid the surgical scar, but a slight drag remained in his right step.
“I'm offering you a contract.”
Danny dropped the crate onto a pallet. “I don't play anymore.”
“You scored four in the dock league last Sunday.”
“Exercise.”
“The third was a left-footed chip after you beat the offside line.”
Danny's face hardened. “You investigated me?”
“The pub posted a terrible video. Your timing hasn't changed.”
“My knee has.”
