Chapter Three: The Discarded
Oscar roared, “Head up! That thing isn't only for silver dye!”
Eli stopped asking for the ball.
At halftime, Greyport trailed 2–0. Rain drummed on the dressing-room roof like fingers counting down the club's life.
Oscar looked at Lin. “Warm up. Replace Mike.”
“At centre-forward?”
“Play as the brain. Tell the others where to run.”
Lin dropped between the midfielders. His first touch went sideways to Gary. His second went back to the goalkeeper. Supporters booed.
Before his third, Lin pointed right. The fullback advanced, dragging Seabridge's winger away. Lin turned and passed into the channel that opened.
Eli was already there.
“Two touches!” Lin shouted.
