Chapter Four: The Seams
Chen did not follow. As the street closed, he called after Lin: “Que did not give you a third button because it doesn't want you to have a third choice.”
They fell into the station. The seven light boxes went dark one by one. Before the last died, the whole street drew a long breath.
At four in the morning they hid in an old printing works Xu rented. Photographs, maps, and clippings covered its walls, linked with threads of different materials. Xu repaired her umbrella while Lin wrote Xiaoman's name on his arm. Each new line made the last one fade.
“Why didn't your brother's numbers disappear?” he asked.
“Pain reminds the body repeatedly.” She offered him a paper knife. “Ink is a record. A wound is an event.”
