After the fourteenth character in each was a faint vertical mark.
They searched twenty years of archived news. Mine collapses, a vanished school bus, a mall fire, disputed demolitions—wherever collective memories conflicted, reports contained the same phrasing and the same mark.
Xu called them seams.
After dawn they entered Linjiang First Hospital. Su Lan's file said she had been admitted for drowning on July fourteenth, accompanied by her husband and only son. Yet the invoice listed two bags of pediatric plasma. One patient's number had been altered.
