After a day of searching abandoned forums, Lin found a five-year-old cached street photograph. Half of the convenience store sign remained, though compression noise had eaten part of Ma’s name. When Lin downloaded it, Tomorrow Layers opened by itself.
RESIDUAL PIXELS OF A DELETED OBJECT DETECTED. CREATE RESTORATION TASK?
The price was not money. It read: AN EQUIVALENT MEMORY MEDIUM IS REQUIRED.
Lin did not click. The software was no wishing well. It was an exchange engine that treated the world as a stock library. Erasing his debt had required the deletion of an asset—and the memories surrounding it—worth exactly the same amount.
