The tape lay on the table. Last night’s message had become forty-seven seconds of silence, except for the low horn of a ferry.
Lin seized his coat and drove to the terminal. Su followed, demanding an explanation.
“I stole one of your sources,” he said.
The docks were empty before ten. A guard insisted berth nine had been abandoned for a decade. Tang Li, however, found fresh drops of blood leading behind the old ticket hall.
They discovered a young man inside a storage locker. Blood covered his forehead. He carried no identification, and his contact list was empty. When police scanned his fingerprints, the database returned NO MATCH.
Su looked at him without recognition.
