Chapter Two: The Day Remade
“We’re not over. I’m angry because I’m afraid you’ll leave me. Wen Yu, don’t sail today.”
He slowly pulled her hands away. Then he tore his boarding pass in half.
“I’ve waited two years for you to say that.”
White Whale left without him.
That evening the news confirmed the vessel had sunk with no survivors. Wen Yu sat on their apartment floor, staring at the casualty list that should have contained his name.
“How did you know?” he asked.
Before Xia Mi could answer, the unfinished melody began inside the bedroom. Wen Yu’s old tape recorder was unplugged, yet its reels were turning.
“I didn’t write this,” he said. “I recorded it in an offshore sonar signal two months ago. Every time I played it, eight seconds vanished from the data log.”
