Chapter Three: Beyond the Bleed

Gu Lan superimposed it over the circle in the drive thumbnail. The strokes matched. As she strained to remember the day, blood fell from her nose. The red drop did not spread. The circle drank it and lit along the unfinished stroke. Three millimeters appeared at the photograph’s right edge. There was a door inside the added space. It was narrow as a printer’s forgotten margin. When Gu Yan touched it, color flowed from the room toward the seam. Their mother called from the living room, asking Gu Lan whom she was talking to. Gu Lan opened her mouth but could not answer. She was forgetting. Gu Yan wrote GU YANN on her wrist in red ink, then added MY BROTHER with a deliberately backward R. “Don’t correct it. Errors jam the overwrite.”
