Chapter Three: The Voice That Was Cut
The film archive collapsed.
Faceless hands reached through hundreds of screens and pulled reels from the shelves. With each reel, something flashed inside Ye Lan: a classroom window, the mole on her mother's hand, a man humming with his back turned.
“This place stores me?”
“It stores the versions cut from you.” Lu severed a pale arm. “Don't let it touch your face.”
Bai burned screens with gunfire, but more awakened. One hand caught Ye Lan's chin. A blank face leaned close, her features forming beneath its skin.
At its touch, she saw the third film's ending.
At a global premiere, billions watched the same screen. The faceless hero wore Ye Lan's face and said, “Accept the final cut.” Everyone in the city froze like extras awaiting direction.
