Chapter Two: The Changing Photograph
At two in the morning, Shen Yan locked himself inside his darkroom.
It had once been his father’s storage room. Missing-person notices for Xingyao covered one wall, their paper yellow with age while her face remained forever twenty-six. The woman inside tonight’s photographs was twenty-six as well.
Shen Yan unplugged the router and inserted the memory card into an old computer that had never touched a network. All forty-three raw files were present. Their metadata was continuous and their checksums valid. No compositing, no remote modification, none of the repeated layers for which he had been condemned seven years ago.
But the eighth photograph had changed.
