Lena recognized an abandoned boiler support. She took the committee downstairs, scraped coating from the actual column base, and had Noah test it with ultrasound. Load-bearing steel had lost less than six percent of its thickness. Three meters away, the fire main leaked salt water.
“This is the real replacement—sixty-four thousand dollars. Obsidian inspected three times and missed it. Under their demolition plan, cutting sparks beside a failed fire system could turn an accident into a death notice.”
The room changed.
By five votes to two, the bank approved the operating lease. The conditions were brutal: temporary occupancy approval in thirty days, positive ground-floor cash flow in sixty, or immediate repossession.
