Chapter Two: The One-Pound Auction
Van der Veer's eyes hardened. Lu's phone rang. Redbridge Athletic in Belgium was offering a one-year contract. Lu had sent the video to more than one club.
“You're using us to raise the price?”
“I'm letting clubs price his career. Redbridge has no European football. Lin prefers Harbor, so you have the final bid. Ten minutes.”
Nine minutes later, Harbor accepted every condition.
Before signing, the club doctor ordered a basic physical screen. Lu shook the doctor's hand and heard nothing. He touched the assistant coach's hand—nothing. The gift worked only on players.
Then reserve captain Matthijs de Jong welcomed him.
