Chapter Three: The Deleted Man

Before Lin Wan could pull the power, the world reloaded. The metal door became wood. The whiteboard shrank into refrigerator magnets; beige wallpaper covered the shielding. The air smelled of detergent and toast. Shen Zhou sat in a living room wearing old pajamas, a wedding band on his left hand. Lin Wan stood at the kitchen entrance wearing its match. Thousands of shared memories flooded them: a first date in a used bookstore, a walk home through rain after an argument, Shen Lan crying through their wedding. Shen Zhou knew coffee hurt Lin Wan's stomach. He knew she stole the blanket in her sleep. The memories were warm enough to make resistance feel cruel. “Don't look at the photographs,” Lin Wan said, breathing hard. “Find the cost.”
