Chapter Four: The Wing Beneath the Ice
"Because the Returners turn every warning into proof that we obstruct truth. Scientists are particularly fond of opening forbidden doors themselves."
At midnight, the camp reached the coordinates.
Ordinary radar showed 3,600 meters of ice. Through Lin's left eye, a sloping tunnel descended beneath camp. It did not hide inside the ice. It occupied the same place under different rules of visibility.
"Entrance bearing northeast, seventeen point four degrees."
Su did not accept his sight as evidence. She placed three geophones along the bearing and fired a microcharge. The return looked like noise until she stacked its seven-second phase. A four-kilometer cavity appeared.
"Now it belongs to more than your eyes," she whispered.
Something sang below.
