Chapter Three: The Name on the Silver Bell
A woman's announcement emerged from the blue fire: “Lost property will close shortly. Ms. Lin Cen, please collect your silver service bell at Yesterday's Photographs.”
The voice was older than Lin remembered, but it left a tiny pause between the syllables of her name. As a child, Lin Yao had done that so “Lin Cen” would not sound like the Chinese word for dawn.
Lin cut the rope and ran. Amara followed her to the photography shop. Its windows displayed a bride cut from her own wedding, faceless students, and an empty chair beside a hospital bed.
Under a red darkroom lamp, a silver bell waited. Two characters were engraved on its handle: LIN YAO.
Amara caught Lin's wrist. “Don't touch it. Remember Roman.”
