Scallion Noodles on a Deadline

A red notice was pasted to the shutter of Night Voyage Diner, its corners curled by rain. Three months behind on rent. Seven days to pay. Shen Yan pressed the paper flat with one hand. Red dye came away wet on his fingertip. He did not tear it down. Removing the paper would not remove the numbers. It was one in the morning. Half the neon sign outside had died, and only one white lamp burned above the stove. Half a pot of chicken broth simmered beneath it. The recipe had belonged to his father: chicken bones, a long patient boil, and a sliver of aged tangerine peel at the end. It was not meant to astonish anyone. It was meant to make people working through the night feel that the city was a little less cold. The city, apparently, had other ideas.
